Visual Memory

Your visual memory is associated with your visual experience. You see with your eyes and you remember what you see. Similarly you hear with your ears and remember what you hear. Thus all your senses contribute to your memory. But if you do not remember what you see with your eyes, you are said to have problems with your visual memory. This is related to the perceptual processing.

If I tell you ‘monkey’ you are able to visualize the figure of monkey in your mind. Any object or person that you have seen already could be recalled like this. This is called as visual memory. The students with learning disability are found to have problems with this kind of memory. If you lack ability to store and retrieve what you have already experienced with your visual sense of perception, then you might have visual memory problem. In this case, you will not be able to reproduce visual stimuli in a sequence. You will have difficulty in remembering the visual appearance of words or letters and this may affect your reading skills and spelling.

Visual memory is very effective than auditory memory. You remember more what you see than what you hear. That is the reason why teachers write important points on the black board though they read the points aloud. This will get into the minds of the students easily and get fixed there. Even though the written work is erased from the black board you will remember it for a long time if you have good visual memory. If you have problems with this memory, when the word is erased, this will be erased from your memory too.

You can sharpen your visual memory skills with few techniques. If you master the art you will be said to have photographic memory. You have to focus on what you see with a good sweeping look. If you play this as a game with your friends, this will be a real fun. You may collect few things and display them. Then ask your friends to have a look at them for few seconds. They may write down the list of things on the paper. The one who could remember more things is the winner.

You can create your own exercise and work on it. There are so many ways of enhancing your visual memory. You need not spend hours together. Just few minutes are enough!
